Nitro Química has continued to reduce its use of renewable and non-renewable resources in its ongoing efforts to produce more with less. The company's increased production capacity was accompanied by processes and technologies that allow energy and water savings.
Gas consumption has fallen by 6.53 million Nm3, equivalent to the amount of gas needed to power a gas vehicle for 85 million kilometres. The reduction in energy use has reached 6,670 megawatt-hours per year, equal to the residential consumption in a city of 35,000 inhabitants. The company also saves 106,200 m3 of water, a volume used by companies with up to four thousand employees.
These achievements resulted in the Ecomagination Leadership Award, given by General Electric Water & Process Technologies. Nitro Química also received the award Conservation in Energy Use, awarded by the Federation of Industries in the State of São Paulo (Fiesp).
Nitro Química has managed to bring down the emission of effluents and maintenance costs, while at the same time increased its own energy production. Currently, the company produces 50% of all its electricity needs throughout the reuse of the steam generated by the Sulfuric Acid production process, which is transformed into electricity.
The company takes water from the Tietê river, treats it and uses it in its production. The effluent passes through primary treatment and is sent to Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo (Sabesp) for new treatment. After the treatment cycle we return water to the river in a better condition than those in which it was initially received.
