In operation since 1937, the company was officially inaugurated by the president of Brazil, Getúlio Vargas. At the time Nitro Química had 2,600 employees.
The company grew with the increasing demand for Brazilian products resulting from the scarcity caused by World War II. Throughout the 1940s, it became the largest 100% Brazilian chemical company.
With the commercial success and industrial development of the 1940s, a policy of benefits and social support for the employees was initiated.
